Getting to know the basics of your impact and Scope emissions
Carbon accounting is like normal financial accounting, except we're calculating carbon instead of money. Every business, regardless of industry, has it's own carbon footprint through everyday business operations whether its through travel, commuting, shipping, or just keeping the lights and heat on in the building. There are three main 'Scopes' of carbon emissions:
Scope 1: Emissions are direct greenhouse (GHG) emissions that occur from sources that are controlled or owned by an organization (e.g., emissions associated with fuel combustion in boilers, furnaces, vehicles)
Scope 2: Emissions are indirect GHG emissions associated with the purchase of electricity, steam, heat, or cooling
Scope 3: Emissions are the result of activities from assets not owned or controlled by the reporting organization, but that the organization indirectly impacts in its value chain.
Examples of emissions in each Scope:
Scope 1: Fuel burned in your building and vehicle usage.
Scope 2: Energy consumption such as electricity and gas used to power a building that has been purchased (think: Utility Bills) including rented and leased spaces.
Scope 3: Travel, shipping, employee commuting, and more.
